A Wild Turkey walks into a bar…

A Wild Turkey walks into a bar..

A Wild Turkey walks into a bar..

Haven’t really been up to snuff lately. Lots of scribbles that deserves no room on the internet. Luckily, from all of this emerged this proud Wild Turkey. I was initially initerested in the bird after seeing a documentary where a man raised a flock of these.

5 hours on cheap drawing paper, Derwent Graphic pencils.

Yet another DotA 2 portrait. Lucifer sketched in 30 minutes. I might step it a bit further and do a watercolor painting based on the sketch.

Dazzle!

DazzleAgain a tribute to DotA 2. Quick(about 10 minutes) drawing of Dazzle the Shadow Priest. It’s a simple foundation drawing for a watercolor painting, so it is based more on shapes, rather than form and volume.  Watercolor version to come, hopefully tomorrow.

Man of Science, Man of Faith

Jack Shephard

Jack Shephard

One of the drawings I did today. I always found Jack very charismatic, so I wanted to see if I could capture his mood in a drawing. Done in modified blind contour drawing – meaning that I drew it ‘blind’ but allowed myself to lift the pencil when appropriate. Drawing ‘blind’ makes the artist draw purely on instinct, and it works remarkably well when you need to do a drawing that has alot of life or emotion.

The piece was done as a fun study, so there are parts that I’m not all that satisfied with, but I decided to leave it as is. The main goal was to capture the emotion, and at that I was successful.

Head of Young Apostle

Study of Raphael Sanzios drawing Head of Young Apostle. Primarily study of values and shading since they are pretty much my weak points. I’ve heard time and time again how important master studies can be and I definitely see the value in doing it once in a while. This took me about 1,5 hours, and I think I had some useful realizations while doing it.

You’ll See Alot More of My Hands

Handscontour2202

Contour drawing of my hand

I’ve been practicing contour drawing a lot lately. I usually start my sessions by doing a few contour drawings of my hands. I try to draw as much ‘blind’ as possible, keeping my eyes on the subject while i draw the lines. I’d say 80% time spent looking at the subject and the rest on the paper. I guess you could call it modified blind contour. After I started focusing this way while drawing my results turned remarkably better. I call it drawing on instinct, I’ll get back to that in another post.

Also, enjoy this (red) bell pepper.

With Malice Toward None

Mono-tone drawing of Abraham Lincoln

Mono-tone drawing of Abraham Lincoln

As you’ve already seen I decided to open this blog with a quote by- and drawing of Abraham Lincoln. I’ve always been intrigued by Lincoln. Since I drew the picture just a few days ago I thought it would make a decent opening post on my to-become drawing blog.

After browsing and admiring several drawing and painting blogs I decided to have a go at it myself. It will mainly serve as an online sketchbook where I frequently post recent sketches, drawings and the occasional painting.

My first and foremost goal is to become a good draftsman with solid knowledge of the fundamentals of drawing(value, form, shape, line, contour etc.). I belive that strong drawing skills are fundamental to many types of (good) art, including fine arts, illustration, story boarding, concept art, and more. That’s why I’ve decided to focus my learning on drawing the first few years. I’ve been drawing for about a year now, and I feel that I’ve made pretty good progress as a self-taught artist. I’m not really sure if I want to focus on fine art, illustration or something similar, but I’m convinced that I’ll have a much easier time having a go at whatever I choose if my drawing skills are fundamentally strong.

As mentioned you might see an occasional painting being posted. If that happens it’s most likely because I’ve had a burnout and need to do something else than drawing.

You are welcome to follow my progress, and I hope you are interested in returning from time to time. Also feel free to post any comments you have.
